Soul Retrieval

What is Soul Loss?

Soul loss is when a piece of our energy or soul dissociates itself from the rest of us in order to protect itself and us. This is often the result of us experiencing some trauma in life but can also occur from less dramatic events such as forgetting to consider our own needs.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines soul as being the "spiritual element of a person, regarded as immortal and a person's emotional or intellectual energy or integrity". Soul loss in the traditional Shamanic sense should not be confused with the phrase 'lost soul' meaning a soul that is dammed.

Soul loss can be felt as any of the following:

What is Soul Retrieval?

Soul Retrieval is a Shamanic form of healing. The Shaman will Journey into the Otherworld to bring back the lost soul part to the client. This means the client can move on to a healthier balance both emotionally, spiritually and physically.

The Shaman cannot tell you before the Soul Retrieval which soul part will be retrieved. Equally you do not need to tell the Shaman before the Soul Retrieval what you feel the problem may be.

How will I feel afterwards?

People's reactions to Soul Retrieval vary and indeed each Soul Retrieval may vary. We are all individuals. Some people feel lighter, some stronger, some happier. Equally some may feel sad at first and some may initially not feel much at all. Soul Retrieval is frequently not an end in itself and for this reason many Shaman will also offer follow up advice, guidance and/or support sessions to ensure the client has the tools to take their next step into a life with more personal power and balance.

Some of the benefits you may experience from soul retrieval include: having the ability to move past an issue; feeling more motivated to plan and make decisions; feeling more alive; and connected. The benefits vary from person to person and are also dependent on what was lost.

How do I choose a Shaman to perform Soul Retrieval?

Choose someone who will chat to you first so you can tell if you feel right about them.

Ask friends to recommend someone. However remember that it is also important that you feel comfortable with the Shaman and different people get on differently.

A Shaman should not be judgemental and should be caring and accepting of your circumstances.

A Shaman should offer advice, support and guidance which they receive from the Otherworld and possibly from their own experience. They should not tell you what to do and should listen and take on board any concerns you may have.

If a Shaman advises you that they feel you also need to seek help from your doctor/medical practitioner or that they cannot help you until you have sought advice first from your doctor/medical practitioner please do not go and find another one who doesn't give you the same advice.

What Soul Retrieval is Not

Regardless of personal tradition or belief Indie Shaman is insistent in its generic belief that Soul Retrieval is not the practice of taking money from bereaved people who have lost loved ones in unfortunate circumstances to 'help lost souls to the light'.

If you are unfortunate enough to have lost a loved one and would like to talk to someone further about spiritual beliefs regarding 'life after death' please email June or join us on the Indie Shaman Forum. If you are finding life very difficult due to distress from bereavement you should also contact your doctor for advice. You may also find the Cruse Bereavement Care website helpful which contains information on loss, information for young people and has a helpline number you can ring.
